What a Tesla Charger Installation Involves
A Wall Connector is not a plug-in appliance. It’s hardwired to a dedicated 240-volt circuit, and the circuit has to be sized for continuous use. The work includes:
- A load calculation to confirm your electrical service can carry the new circuit
- A dedicated double-pole breaker in your panel, typically 60 amps for full speed
- Properly sized copper conductors, run in conduit where required, from the panel to the charger
- Mounting the Wall Connector at the right height and location for your parking spot
- Torqued terminations, then commissioning in the Tesla app, where the breaker size is set and the unit connects to Wi-Fi for updates
- The electrical permit and final inspection
What Size Breaker Does a Tesla Charger Need?
EV charging is a continuous load, so the circuit must be rated at 125% of the charger’s output. That’s where the common sizes come from:
|
Wall Connector setting |
Breaker |
Charging speed* |
|---|---|---|
|
48 amps (maximum) |
60 amp |
About 40–44 miles of range per hour |
|
40 amps |
50 amp |
About 30–34 miles per hour |
|
32 amps |
40 amp |
About 25 miles per hour |
|
Mobile Connector on a NEMA 14-50 outlet |
50 amp |
About 30 miles per hour |
*Approximate and model-dependent. Your car also has a maximum on-board charge rate, so a larger circuit does not always mean faster charging. Some Teslas accept 48 amps; others top out at 32 or 40.
We check your vehicle’s maximum rate and your panel’s spare capacity, then set the Wall Connector to match the circuit we install. If your panel can’t support 60 amps today, we’ll tell you what a 40 or 50 amp circuit will actually cost you in charging speed. For most drivers, that difference is invisible overnight.
How Much Does Tesla Charger Installation Cost?
-
In the West Palm Beach area, most Tesla Wall Connector installations cost about $800 to $2,500 for the electrical work. Tesla’s own guidance puts a new 240-volt outlet at $750 to $1,500, which lines up with a simple job near the panel.

Typical range*
Wall Connector on the wall beside the panel (short run)
$800 – $1,400
Wall Connector, typical garage run of 20–50 ft in conduit
$1,200 – $2,500
NEMA 14-50 outlet for the Mobile Connector
$700 – $1,600
Outdoor, carport, detached garage, or trenching
$2,000 – $4,500+

If your panel needs a 200 amp upgrade first
Add $3,000 – $6,000
*Estimates for planning only, and they exclude the charger itself. Your exact price is confirmed in a free written estimate.
What moves the price: the distance from your panel, whether the wire runs through open walls or conduit, indoor vs. outdoor mounting, the amperage you choose, your panel’s spare capacity, and the permit fee for your city.

If a second, non-Tesla EV is likely in your household, the Universal Wall Connector saves you an adapter and a second charger later. If you mostly charge at work or travel often, an outlet plus the Mobile Connector may be all you need. Not sure? See our [Level 2 EV charger installation] page for a broader comparison.
Our Installation Process
- Free assessment: Send photos of your panel and parking area, or we’ll come look. We confirm capacity, the route for the wire, and the best mounting spot.
- Written estimate: A flat, itemized price covering circuit, labor, and permit.
- Permit: We pull the electrical permit with the City of West Palm Beach or Palm Beach County.
- Installation: We install the dedicated circuit, mount the Wall Connector, and make all terminations to spec. Most installs take 3–6 hours.
- Commissioning: We set the breaker size in the app, connect the unit to Wi-Fi, run the firmware update, and charge your car to confirm it works.
- Inspection: We schedule and meet the final inspection, so the job is documented and closed out.
Will Your Panel Handle a 60 Amp Circuit?
This is the question that decides your price. A Wall Connector at full output adds 48 amps of continuous demand.
- 200 amp service with open breaker space: usually a straightforward install.
- 200 amp service with a full panel: a [sub-panel installation] often costs less than a new main panel.
- 100 or 150 amp service: typically needs a [200 amp panel upgrade], especially with central AC and a pool pump already running.
- Federal Pacific or Zinsco panel: that panel should be replaced before adding a large circuit. See our [Federal Pacific panel replacement] page.
Our free safety inspection answers this before you spend anything.

Frequently Asked Questions
Most Tesla Wall Connector installations in the West Palm Beach area run about $800 to $2,500 for the electrical work, not counting the charger. Tesla estimates $750 to $1,500 for a new 240-volt outlet, which matches a simple installation close to the panel.
A 60 amp breaker supports the Wall Connector’s maximum 48 amp output. A 50 amp breaker supports 40 amps, and a 40 amp breaker supports 32 amps. EV charging is a continuous load, so the breaker is sized at 125% of the charger’s output. The breaker size is then set in the app during commissioning.
If your panel has the capacity, 60 amps gives you the fastest charging and room for a future EV with a higher charge rate. If capacity is tight, 50 amps still adds about 30 miles of range per hour, which is plenty overnight.
A hardwired Wall Connector needs only two hot conductors and a ground, so 6/2 with ground is the usual choice for a 60 amp circuit. 6/3 includes a neutral, which the Wall Connector doesn’t use but a NEMA 14-50 outlet does. We size and select the conductors for your run length and installation method.
We don’t recommend it. The circuit lands on live bus bars in your panel, the work requires a permit and inspection, and mistakes in wire sizing or terminations are a fire risk. Professional installation also keeps your insurance and warranty coverage intact.
Most installations take 3 to 6 hours. Longer runs, outdoor work, or a panel upgrade can extend that to a full day or more.
Yes. Adding a 240-volt circuit requires an electrical permit and a final inspection. We pull the permit and meet the inspector.
Yes. The Wall Connector is rated for outdoor installation, and in South Florida we mount it out of direct spray and weather where possible, with weather-rated fittings throughout.
Yes. Multiple Wall Connectors can share one circuit using Tesla’s Power Sharing feature, which splits the available power between vehicles instead of requiring two full circuits. We’ll confirm the best setup for your panel.
Yes. Most customers already have a Wall Connector from Tesla. We install customer-supplied units and commission them in the app.
